This is the "Character panel" (a deck contains many panels, like a deck of cards) the Guide is referring to, not anything in the "Styles" sidebar as you thought. To access "the Character panel in the Sidebar", you need to first click the "Properties" icon instead of "Styles" on the sidebar (this is called "Properties Deck" and "Styles Deck" in LibreOffice terminology, BTW), then find "Characters" section in "Properties" sidebar, clicking on the plus sign to expand if necessary. The vulnerability, found by Cisco Talos researchers and tracked as CVE-2016-4324, affects the RTF parser in LibreOffice.

I know that LibreOffice Writer can facilitate subscripts and superscripts in ordinary, non-formula, textwhen I copy and paste such things from Microsoft Office Word 2007 documents LibreOffice Writer manages to accommodate them.
